CHAR Tech PFAS Testing Finds No Detectable Compounds in Biochar

CHAR Technologies Ltd. (TSXV: YES) has reported that independent laboratory testing found no detectable levels of 40 targeted per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS, in biochar produced using the company’s High Temperature Pyrolysis technology.

The Canadian clean-technology company announced the results on August 17. Its HTP system processes wastewater biosolids—the solid material left after municipal sewage treatment—and converts the material into renewable energy and biochar.

According to CHAR Tech, samples were collected during five separate operating events in 2025. Each sample was taken after the HTP system had operated for two hours, allowing the equipment to reach steady-state conditions. The samples were then submitted to an accredited third-party laboratory in the United States.

Testing used EPA Method 1633, an analytical method designed to measure 40 PFAS compounds in materials including wastewater, soil, biosolids and sediment. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends the method for PFAS analysis in biosolids, although it is not yet nationally required for Clean Water Act compliance monitoring.

CHAR Tech said none of the 40 targeted compounds was detected in the submitted biochar samples. The finding applies specifically to the solid output of the HTP process and does not yet establish that PFAS was destroyed across the system’s complete output.

Testing of the gaseous and aqueous phases remains underway. Those results will be needed to determine whether PFAS compounds or breakdown products were transferred into other output streams during treatment.

“Our testing shows our HTP produces biochar with no detectable PFAS,” CEO Andrew White said. He added that the technology is being developed for a contamination problem receiving increased regulatory attention.

The EPA’s 2026 interim PFAS guidance said thermal treatment conducted under certain conditions can effectively destroy PFAS and limit environmental releases. However, the agency also identified remaining uncertainties, including possible air emissions and products of incomplete combustion under some operating conditions.

CHAR Tech is developing HTP systems that process wood and organic waste to produce renewable natural gas or green hydrogen and biocarbon. The company is now evaluating PFAS treatment as an additional application for the platform.

Upcoming Catalysts

CHAR Tech expects to complete testing of the gaseous and aqueous output streams and have a data package ready for submission to the EPA by the end of the fourth quarter of 2026. Further updates could address the complete testing results, EPA engagement and the potential development of a commercial PFAS-treatment application.
