Why MillworkSuite Trained Its Own AI Model for Cabinet Shops

MillworkSuite, an Orlando, Florida-based company, announced in a press release on August 22 that it has launched an AI-powered estimating and direct-to-CAD platform built specifically for millwork and casework manufacturers, the shops that build custom cabinets, countertops, and built-in fixtures for construction projects. The platform reads a set of architectural PDF drawings, produces a priced scope of work, and exports that same scope directly into HOMAG iX, Microvellum, or CabinetVision, three CAD programs commonly used in cabinet manufacturing, as cabinet layouts already positioned where the architect drew them on the wall. MillworkSuite says one customer, SMI Cabinetry, cut its drafting time in half using the platform; that figure describes one company’s specific result, not an audited average across MillworkSuite’s customer base.

The Actual Bottleneck This Targets

According to the release, a typical millwork shop estimates roughly ten projects for every one it actually drafts, and drafting, not estimating, is what limits how much paying work a shop can take on. The manual process the release describes is genuinely repetitive: a drafter builds a wall layout largely from scratch in CAD software, placing each cabinet box by hand and setting roughly twenty parameters per unit, work that draws on the drafter’s judgment far less than it draws on their patience, followed by copying, pasting, and nudging boxes until gaps close correctly. MillworkSuite’s founder, Rob Hull, says he built the tool after running into this exact backlog problem at his own cabinet shop, and that no amount of hiring could shorten the drafting queue fast enough, a detail that matters for context: skilled drafters capable of working in trade-specific CAD software are not a role a shop can simply post a job listing for and expect to fill quickly, which is part of why a software solution to the bottleneck is appealing in the first place.

How the Estimating-to-CAD Pipeline Actually Works

On import, the platform renames and groups uploaded sheets by drawing set, scans them for room names, drawing scales, and millwork types, and ties each elevation marker to the sheet it references. Dimensions and areas are calculated from each page’s printed scale and totaled across the full sheet set, and a shop applies its own material, labor, and overhead rates plus any discounts to generate a priced, submission-ready estimate. When the shop moves to drafting, sizes adjusted during estimating carry through automatically, a mapping table links each detected millwork type to the shop’s own CAD product library, and narrowing one base cabinet shifts adjacent units to close the resulting gap rather than requiring manual re-alignment. Revision sets, change orders, addenda, and re-issued drawings, are grouped by sheet number against the originals so a shop can see what actually changed before committing drafting time to it, rather than re-drafting an entire elevation to catch one revised dimension. The release also states that project data is encrypted and that MillworkSuite itself cannot access it, a security claim that comes from the company and was not independently verified for this article.

Why ‘Custom Open-Weight Models’ Is the Real Technical Story

MillworkSuite’s technology partner, CLOUDSUFI, developed and trained custom open-weight models specifically for this platform rather than building on a general-purpose AI service. Open-weight models are AI models whose underlying parameters are published and can be run and modified independently, as opposed to closed models accessible only through a company’s own hosted service. Training a custom model on a narrow task like parsing architectural drawings for cabinet-specific dimensions and room labels, rather than relying on a general-purpose model prompted for the same task, typically trades broad flexibility for higher accuracy and more predictable behavior on that specific job, along with more control over where sensitive drawing data actually goes during processing. Reading construction drawings accurately in the first place is a nontrivial computer vision and document-parsing problem: architectural PDFs vary widely in scale, labeling convention, and drawing style from firm to firm, which is presumably why a narrowly trained, purpose-built model was worth the investment rather than a generic AI tool.

Scope, Pricing, and What’s Not Disclosed

MillworkSuite is intentionally narrow: it covers uppers, bases, countertops, vanities, toe kicks, and soffits rather than serving construction takeoff broadly the way some competing tools do, a deliberate trade-off the release frames as a strength since the platform doesn’t need to handle the enormous variety of trades a general construction takeoff tool has to support. The platform is generally available now, with subscription tiers ranging from an estimating-only “Takeoff” plan sold through authorized partners, to “Starter” and “Premium” tiers that add the direct-to-CAD export, up to an “Enterprise” tier for higher-volume shops; specific pricing figures were not disclosed in the release. New customers go through a structured onboarding process covering pricing catalog setup, CAD library mapping, and team training, and the release doesn’t specify how long that onboarding typically takes or how many shops have adopted the platform beyond the one named case study.
