MDA Space Ltd. (TSX: MDA) (NYSE: MDA) announced in a press release on August 4 that the value of its satellite manufacturing contract with Telesat Corporation (Nasdaq: TSAT) (TSX: TSAT) has increased by $474 million, following Telesat’s decision to expand its Lightspeed low Earth orbit (LEO) broadband constellation. The increase matters beyond its dollar figure: part of what MDA Space is now building is dedicated military communications capacity for the Canadian Arctic, tying a commercial satellite broadband project directly to a national defense program.
What’s Changing
Telesat is expanding its Lightspeed constellation by 69 satellites, bringing the total number of fully funded satellites from 156 to 225. For MDA Space, which manufactures the AURORA satellites used in the constellation, that translates to 27 additional satellites beyond the 198 previously announced, for a new total of 225. The gap between Telesat’s 69-satellite expansion and MDA Space’s 27-satellite increase reflects that not every added satellite in Telesat’s broader fleet plan is necessarily built by MDA Space under this specific contract; the release does not break out that difference further. The $474 million contract increase covers the new satellites, the addition of 500 MHz of military Ka-band spectrum to satellites already in production (replacing an equivalent amount of commercial Ka-band spectrum), and other long-lead components, meaning parts and materials that take a long time to procure and are typically ordered well ahead of when they’re needed on the manufacturing line. MDA Space says the majority of that increase will be added to its financial backlog, a company’s confirmed but not yet completed contract work, in the third quarter of 2026, with some long-lead items already reflected in an earlier period.
Why the Spectrum Swap Matters
Ka-band is a range of radio frequencies commonly used for high-throughput satellite broadband. Every AURORA satellite built for the Lightspeed constellation will now carry a mix of commercial and military Ka-band spectrum on the same spacecraft rather than requiring a separate, dedicated military satellite fleet. That is a meaningfully different approach from a purpose-built military constellation: it lets a single commercial satellite program absorb defense-grade communications capacity on shared hardware, which can be more capital-efficient than standing up parallel infrastructure, though it also means Telesat, a commercial operator, is playing a subcontractor role on national security infrastructure, which is worth watching in terms of contract structure and oversight going forward.
The Bigger Program: Arctic Defense Communications
This expansion builds on a Strategic Partnership Agreement that MDA Space, Canada’s Department of National Defence, and Telesat signed in December 2025 as part of the Enhanced Satellite Communications Project-Polar, or ESCP-P, a program intended to give the Canadian Armed Forces reliable connectivity across the Arctic. MDA Space CEO Mike Greenley tied the expansion directly to that mission, framing Arctic communications as necessary for protecting Canadian sovereignty, maintaining situational awareness, and coordinating with allies in a region where, as he put it, response time matters.
The release also confirms that the Government of Canada has named MDA Space as prime contractor for a related but separate piece of ESCP-P: a secure UHF and X-band communications constellation in medium Earth orbit, with Telesat serving as subcontractor on that component. A prime contractor holds the primary agreement with the government and is accountable for overall program delivery, while a subcontractor performs a defined portion of the work under the prime contractor’s direction. Negotiations to define and develop that part of the program are underway, and contract details have not yet been finalized or disclosed.
Where This Fits in the Broader LEO Race
MDA Space is one of several companies building out LEO satellite constellations for broadband, alongside better-known commercial players like SpaceX’s Starlink, Amazon’s Kuiper, and OneWeb. Most of those constellations compete primarily on commercial broadband coverage, latency, and cost. What distinguishes this contract is the defense layer: MDA Space and Telesat are positioning a shared satellite platform to serve both paying commercial customers and a national government’s military communications needs simultaneously, a model that could be replicated by allied governments facing similar high-latitude or remote-region coverage gaps, where laying terrestrial fiber or maintaining ground-based relay infrastructure is impractical.
For a company like MDA Space, a contract value increase tied to backlog is also a different kind of news than a one-time product announcement. Backlog represents work the company has already been awarded and expects to convert into revenue over time, rather than a speculative pipeline; the $474 million added here is incremental to the base contract MDA Space already had in place with Telesat, not a new customer relationship.
What’s Still Pending
Several elements of this announcement remain unresolved. The UHF/X-band component of ESCP-P has no finalized contract value or timeline yet. MDA Space’s own forward-looking statement in the release specifically flags the ultimate number of satellites delivered, their final technical specifications, their ability to fulfill the purpose for which they were intended, and the pace at which backlog converts into recognized revenue as uncertain and subject to change, standard language for a company whose own annual filings acknowledge that assumptions underlying its outlook may not hold.
