MGE Takes Equity Stake in Realta Fusion’s Wisconsin Plan

What “Magnetic Mirror” Fusion Actually Is

Realta describes itself as developing what it calls CoSMo fusion, compact, scalable, and modular systems based on the magnetic mirror fusion concept. Most fusion reactor designs getting public attention today, including large international projects like ITER, use a tokamak, a closed, donut-shaped magnetic chamber that confines plasma in a loop. Realta’s Track Record So Far

Realta says it is one of just eight companies selected for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Milestone-Based Fusion Development Program, a real, competitively selected federal program, and was named a World Economic Forum Technology Pioneer in 2026. The company is backed by venture investors Khosla Ventures and Future Ventures. Separately, Realta recently leased approximately 250,000 square feet of office and industrial space in Madison for a research and development facility it calls The Realta Forge, located at the former Oscar Mayer plant site, within MGE’s own service territory, a detail that underscores how intertwined this partnership already is with the local utility and community before this specific power plant announcement.

Why a Utility Would Take an Equity Stake

MGE has publicly committed to net-zero carbon electricity by 2050, a pledge it made in 2019, making it one of the earlier U.S. utilities to set that kind of target.
